Burlingame High School – Class of 1964

Last week, I went to a benefit for the kidney foundation of northern ca.  This is a great event that features authors who sign books and speak at the luncheon.  Michael Krassney of NPR moderated.  Among the authors were E.L.Doctorow, Tracy Kidder and Gail Collins.  Collins, the first woman on the editorial board of the NY Times and has written a lot of populist history, the most recent being a book on women who grew up in the 60′s and 70′s.  I never considered myself an historical icon, but I was jolted into the reality of being living history when she spoke about women wearing pants and when they were allowed to do this in public.  I would suspect, ours was one of the first classes for women to not only be accepted into the “working world” no matter how hard we had to work to achieve that, but also one of the first generations of women since WWII where the middle class really had to work.  Anybody out there who has a stay at home wife of  long standing??  I  would have chafed at the thought of staying home.  On the other hand, I never saw my kids take their first steps or hear their first words.  I rather envy women today who can take a few months off and whose spouses can do the same.  Our generation is kind of weird, but I think we pushed the boundaries of acceptable behavior, and opened the world to greater diversity, although no one could ever accuse us of being a diverse class in any way.  I think you’re a great webmaster as long as you wish to continue. Many, many thanks to all of you who organised last month’s event….Maggi and I enjoyed the Friday night get together at PCC immensely.  Unfortunately, we had other committments that weekend, but it was terrific to reconnect with so many classmates and literally pick up where we left off.  Best wishes to all of you, Class of ’64, gordon

Hi Dennis,

Wanted to take a moment to thank you for the “Buzz Book”, great to be able to contact many old classmates.  Also want to Thank You, Fred, Len and Bill for putting the reunion together I think you did a great job and received a very positive response from everyone I talked to on Sunday at BHS.

In response to your question, no I did not make it sailing around the world however I did spend years sailing and racing on big boats here in the Bay, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Caribbean and some on the North Sea off Germany.  Left the racing when they started to race bank accounts and rulebooks instead of boats.

Did not join the regular Coast Guard but spent many years in the Coast Guard Auxiliary teaching, patrolling and doing safety inspections here in the Delta and up and down the coast of California.

Have lived in Brentwood, Contra Costa County for over twenty years – love the near by Delta.  Still sail often, ski often as I can [water and snow], carry a camera most days, and spend time in the mountains hiking, camping and getting away.

Very sorry I missed Friday and Saturday evening Reunion events was looking forward to seeing old friends and classmates.  Sunday was great but too short I plan to “Buzz” some names and reach out a bit before the 50th.

Dennis, thank you for writing to me.  I also appreciate your remembering the senior talent show.  I remember it, too, playing the Dave Clark Five’s “Glad All Over” in the height of the musical “British Invasion.”  Like many of my classmates, I’m afraid that my musical tastes probably never really evolved from the songs I loved in the sixties, but after hearing my 35 year old son (then 13) bring home a rap record, I feel much more comfortable with the past than the present.

I also appreciate your sending me the web site and the announcement of the post-Christmas dinner.  I’ve had a chance to look over the web site and was saddened to read about Don’s passing.  I also scoured it for the panorama photograph (which I found), so I won’t have to take mine, scan it in three pieces and stitch it together in Photoshop.  My interest in photography didn’t really begin until 1969, so I’m afraid I have no images to contribute to the class page.  Perhaps a comment, if I can think of something to add…

What brought you to the 707 area code?  After living in Santa Rosa for thirty years, we’ve exchanged our (707) for a (510) and are enjoying living a bit closer to San Francisco and UC.  Both my wife and I are long time Giants fans, and we like being able to make Sunday afternoon games at AT & T in about a half hour.  Only 172 days until opening day…

Dennis, thanks again for including me.  I’m glad to know about the web site.  It has brought back memories that I hadn’t recalled in more than forty years.

Thanks also to Carol Thompson Johnston, Class of  ’59, who sent some photos of the campus taken earlier this year. Good evening…

I just wanted to let all of you know that on September 27, just a few hours after we got back to Folsom , we received a call from San Francisco Medical Center telling us they had a kidney for Jim.  We turned right around and headed back to the bay area faster than you could imagine.  He had his transplant the morning of the 28th and was released on 10/1 ..3 days after surgery.  He was doing so well and they felt he was ready to go home.  It has almost been a week and he continues to progress with no issues. The kidney came from a 51 yr. old donor so he thinks he will be 52 next year!!  Right!!!  We are so happy and blessed with his progress and the success of medicine of today.  Talk to you all real soon….
